At the Fort Collins Veterinary Emergency and Rehabilitation Hospital we offer small animal rehabilitation for injuries and illnesses of all kinds.

Our rehab veterinarian will decide which modality of physical medicine is appropriate, such as laser therapy, veterinary acupuncture, physical therapy, or underwater treadmill.

Rehab is the term used to describe physiotherapy in animals. Conditions that are particularly helped by rehabilitation include:

  • Postoperative recovery from fracture repairs or other orthopedic surgeries
  • Neurologic conditions including intervertebral disk disease, degenerative myelopathy, traumatic spinal cord or brain injury
  • Recovery from stroke-like conditions
  • Geriatric muscle loss and pain associated with osteoarthritis
  • Obesity

Goals of rehab include pain management, improved strength, enhanced proprioception and better quality of life. Modalities instituted during rehab sessions may include laser therapy, balance boards and balls, obstacle training, massage and other physical medicine techniques, therapeutic exercise, veterinary acupuncture, and more.
